Highway is not an Imtiaz Ali film, it's Dibakar Banerjee film. Actually it is Imtiaz Ali doing Dibakar Banerjee thing in Cinema!
I can't say that watching highway was/is a beautiful experience. One can't enjoy it. Despite all other previous Imtiaz Ali films, it lacks so called "entertainment-factor", so it won't entertain you. But if you have even a little bit of "sence of being" then you will end up feeling sad after watching Highway, realizing that Highway exists in your society, you are part of that society where Highway-thing is happening! It's another thing that people exit-ed (came out) from cinema hall feeling sad and angry because they felt it boring! There are some reason for that:
Majorly there are three types of movies- Loud entertainer, Reality and Art.
Both Love AAjkal, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and Singham, Rowdy Rathore types of movies belong to loud entertainer. It is Reality Cinema where Highway belongs/relies. Mere purpose of watching cinema today still is to get entertained, and since reality cinema lacks the entertainment factor, Highway doesn't appeal to a larger mass, broader audience. So most of the regular viewer will be disappointed after watching Highway.
But it is a great movie. I won't call it just another movie because it hurts you. I felt the pain and was disturbed while exit-ing (coming out) from cinema hall, still am! So, it's more than a movie. Although i can watch it tens of times without getting bored i won't recommend it to everyone because as said above, it lacks the loud-entertaining factor. And since more than 75% of people who go to cinema hall these days search for the entertainment-thing, oneself beyond that 75% -thing , GO WATCH HIGHWAY, you won't be disappointed!
Note
Highway, in true sense, is a movie for critics! One can complain it as a boring film if doesn't gets entertained but can't say it a bad movie, NO! Two things: one- if anyone says Highway is a bad movie then i will suggest everyone to ignore that voice because it's immature and childish (non-sence) comment, and two- if any one starts diving into acting, cinematography, music and even direction then i will suggest them to learn criticism 'in real sense'! (And even suggest them to listen John Abraham's dialogues of Taxi No 9211 while discussing with Dr Ruslam of Munna Bhai - tum log... tum jaise log....).
About Highway-Story
Veera actually is a representative character of many, and so many Veeras around us, in our society, in our family. A girl, in our society and family, without Veera-experience will be the luckiest one but it's not a fairytell world my friends ( as Red says in Shawshank Redemption about prison life), more than seven among ten girl has experienced (are experiencing!) the Veera-pain in various ways and extent. Highway is a terrifying and painful reality of my family and my society my friends, so is it of yours. Again i say it is not just a movie- it's more. It's a story of that Veera you are connected in your life in various faces (friend, sister wife...)!!
